1. “Let’s Align”
Translation: “You’re not doing it the way I want.” When your boss says “let’s align,” it usually means there’s a disconnect and they want everyone moving in the same direction, their direction.
2. “Per My Last Email”
Translation: “I already told you this. Please read your inbox.” This is the corporate equivalent of passive-aggressive frustration wrapped in professionalism.
3. “Let’s Take This Offline”
Translation: “This is getting too complicated for this meeting.” Sometimes it genuinely means the topic deserves a deeper conversation. Other times, it’s a polite way to shut down a tangent.
4. “I’ll Have to Check My Calendar”
Translation: “I’m going to pretend I might be busy so I can decide later if I actually want to do this.” A classic corporate stalling technique.
5. “That’s a Great Question”
Translation: “I have no idea, but I need a second to think.” This phrase buys time while making the asker feel validated. Everyone wins, temporarily.
